USB files gone

Hi!

I have a rather severe problem which I hope you guys can help me with. I have a 4GB USB stick where I store essays and things I write for my studies. Now, when I connected the USB to my laptop (Win 7) this morning, it was empty, save for a "FOUND.000" folder which contains about 1900 weird "FILE0000.CHK" files you can't do anything with.

When I tried connecting the USB to my desktop computer (Win XP), not even this weird folder showed up. The USB seems to be completely empty.
However, when I right-click it on "My Computer", it says that almost 3 GB are still used, as if my stuff was still there. It seems empty, though.

Please help me, there are several essays on it which I have yet to turn in, and I would hate to re-write all of it!

EDIT: I am indeed a total computer noob. The .chk files are apparently my files in a "crashed" format? I got a program that should restore them, hopefully. Let's hope that works. Sorry to bother.

Thanks. :)

Those weird FILE000.CHK files are the result of the chkdsk command being run against that thumb drive.
