usb help

hi i hope this is in the right section if not i appolagize.
here goes i have just made up a pc from old parts for the kids everything is fine exept that i have to unplug the usb mouse and plug it back in for it to work after startup.
the pc is running xp home service pack one i will be putting it on the internet and installing service pack 2, i just want to get this problem sorted out thanks for any help
 
You know, my main PC does the same thing... It's not every time, but about 1/4 of my boots require me to unplug my wireless mouse receiver and plug it back up.

Have you tried converting to PS/2? I've been meaning to...
 
Mine does the same thing from time-to-time. The keyboard does the same thing too. I've found that the problem is caused by the drivers. For some reason the drivers either go bad sometimes, or if I reinstall the OS, Windows has to detect the hardware again... Next time you reboot the machine, leave the mouse plugged in for about 3 - 5 min, and see if it starts working on it's own. If it does, I would try to find better drivers. Otherwise, you may even check that your CMOS battery is fully charged. If it's really low, it could cause the BIOS not to detect the mouse at POST. This is especially likely since you said you built the computer out of old components.
