usb not working

hi guys i have packard bell laptop easynote e4715. when i turn the laptop on it boots up ok but a screen pops up with extended io bus -if i put a usb stick in the latop it sees the name of the usb but then it starts looking for the hardware but cant find it any ideas?thanks stu1
 
What is the past history of your notebook...was it just infected, any hardware water or lightning damage, or did this just happen out of the blue?

What happens if you plug in a usb mouse, or keyboard.
I would go into device manager in system in the control panel and see if you see any " X " or " !" on any hardware.
what OS do you have?

everything was working. there has not been any damage. the OS i am using is xp, i have looked at the device manager and there is no errors.
when the computer has booted a screen pops up with detected new hardware(can not intall new hardware?)
