(USB OS) Linux Or Windows

I have Windows XP on all of my home computers, but wanted to install an operating system on my thumb drive. In relation to this purpose, what do you think would be better Linux Or Windows... Keeping in mind that to get them on the thumb drive both of them are going to have to be the scaled down versions. Also, I've never tried Linux so I don't know much about it.

Linux hands down. There's livecds with heaps of compressed software designed for the purpose. With windows you would get a very bare bone system.
 
Yah, I was looking at Damn Small Linux, but what kind of things are you sacrificing when you use an OS that is 50MB? Also, I've never used Linux before, how hard is the transition between Windows to Linux?

DSL packs a lot of packages into that 50MB, including a graphical environment. It's not hard to use linux. You'll be sufficient in no time :D
 
Can I install apps on to the OS? For Instance, I have the USB in my computer, can I download and install a program, that will come up installed next time I plug it in the computer?
 
I believe you can.
However I think you should use knoppix and save your profile and files to your pin.
