USB plug and play won't work

This all started with a virus a few weeks ago, and somewhere along the way I ended up doing a fresh install of Windows XP Pro. But since the fresh install -my USB stuff doesn't work. I have searched long and hard for a fix, but so far nothing has worked.

Luckily, for some reason, my mouse works (in any usb port), but my keyboard, printer, external hard drive, and flash drives don't work. When I plug them in I am prompted to put the product cd in to install, which I do if I have it, and it is never able to install the usb device or find any drivers.

I have deleted the USB ports in Device Manager, restarted to reinstall that stuff, took the battery out of the motherboard to reset, tried to reinstall drivers, reloaded drivers with motherboard cd, but my computer always tells me it can't find the necessary software.

I tried to run driver updates on my printer, but it tells me to plug in the printer - and the printer is already plugged in. For some reason the usb ports are not reading these plug and play items. I am also having trouble searching out drivers online because my keyboard doesn't work. I even tried to use a USB to P/S2 converter to use the keyboard and it wouldn't work either.

I have an EVGA 680i motherboard - BFG Nvidia. Any suggestions?

Just a suggestion while you're waiting for someone to help you more:

Make sure it's plugged in the right way. I know, I know, but listen I spent 2 hours diagnosing my friend's printer before I finally decided to start with the basics and found that something was plugged in wrong.

Everything appears to be plugged in properly. And the computer even recognizes that something has been plugged in, but it does not automatically install it like it should.

Possible your Windows installation got corrupted while installing or it also could be a hard drive or motherboard issue.

I may be having motherboard issues because my computer has been acting up for quite some time, and some things seem to test properly, but still not work. For example my hard drive doesn't read and I have to unplug it at the motherboard, and then when I plug it back in it usually starts up. But when tested the hard drive is fine. Same with my video card. My computer wouldn't boot up and it seemed that my video card might be crapping out and I was getting a video pool error during start up, and I actually bought a new card, but now I am thinking that it may be the motherboard all along. And now with the usb stuff, too.

What would you guys recommend I do?

If thats the case, it could be motherboard or psu. What power supply do you have?

I could have my local computer guys test it.

Do you think it would be cheaper just to go ahead and buy a new motherboard and get this all out of the way, or have my computer guys go thru the testing process?

This is my work computer and it has been down for 14 days now, and I really, really need to get it back up and running today. I have been getting by with my laptop, but now is the time to finally figure this thing out. I guess I am going to take it in and just tell them to not give it back until it is fixed.

Should I have them test the power supply and all the components, or just get a new motherboard and forget it?
