USB ports quit working

The usb ports quit working on my compaq laptop without warning. (XP operating system). Of course, this happened one month out of warranty. Compaq troubleshooting tell me I have a bad motherboard. It is not cost effective to replace it as I can get a new laptop for about this same money.
I even purchased a PC card with USB ports and the PC card is not recognized either.
Any suggestions? Thanks!

Other than what you've already listed, no. And is this related to the other post on USB ports that you posted in another thread?

Thanks for the feedback, although I was hoping for better news. And no, this post is not related to the other post. Two different computers. This USB issue is on my desktop, while the non working USB ports is on my laptop.

i think ~~~~~you can reinstall your OS first~~~cuz sometimes everythink happened because of the OS problem
"I even purchased a PC card with USB ports and the PC card is not recognized either." because of it~~~~i suggest you do it first, so you can get rid of one possibility

what you could try is to turn off laptop as normal, then unplug the mains adapter and remove the battery for about 30 seconds to a minute, then refit the battery, plug in the mains adapter again and restart laptop to see if this helps ;)
