usb to serial port adapter

I built an interface that uses rs 232 to communicate. It turns out the best way is with a usb to serial port interface. My question is I purchased one that will not recognise my interface properly, but another make (Belken) will work well. What could be the difference? and would there be a way to make the one I purchased work?
Thanks

They use different chipsets and all... A while back I was looking for one for my GPS. Many of them would make sure you knew it was or was not compatable with certain brands of GPS's and such... So yeah, it's probably just different hardware. Realize it's not a direct connection or anything. Your basically emulating a serial port, so it's not always going to be 100%
