hi, I have a desktop PC home but I don't have a router and I have a number of mobile devices that I would like them to access internet through wifi connection. I'd like to know

1. is there something like USB stick or likewise such that I can simply connect it to the USB port of my PC and develop a WIFI environment?

2. what is the range of the wifi ?

3. I guess it is not as good as a router, but I don't want to setup a router. I'd like to know if the performance of such thing is good

4. Please recommend a particular model or brand about such devices.

Thank you.

Yes, you will not have any kind of wifi network unless you install a router.

Most consumer routers are plug and play. You connect it to your modem, and connect to the secure network that is written on a sticker on the back/bottom of the wireless router. It's really not complicated at all. This way you don't need to waste time configuring a PC for internet sharing, plus the extra cost of electricity, and you get much greater range.

There is software such as Connectify that will allow your computer to double as a wireless router. Your desktop will require a wifi adapter to make it work.

Yeah, I believe if you absolutely don't wan't a router you can use ICS I think and share the LAN Internet cable with a WIFI USB adapter.

I've done that, but in reverse. I had a laptop get a WIFI signal, made a crossover cable and plugged that in the laptop and desktop. There by giving me Internet on the desktop. Worked pretty good.

That software might be your ticket. Just be sure to use WPA2 AES and a good pass phrase with upper, lower letters, numbers and symbols. 15 characters in length should be pretty good. Something like: !gH70OlKiy0(y#@

Here's how you do it free. You bridge connections. I used ICS in my case, but that was different. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gg0hsWN7uA

I even used a router with a dial-up connection once using ICS. Dude at the computer shop showed me how. Good ol' dial-up days. LOL

Oh! Range depends on your surroundings. Walls, etc. Expect at least 50' or more with a USB adapter with two antennas using diversity. Keep in mind that a USB WIFI adapter as a router means you need to leave the computer on all the time or when you want the connection. A netbook could do the job well. I use a netbook for a FTP server that stores all files on a SD card and it even hosts a Teamspeak server! LOL! Powerful little devices. Low power consumption. But for that price you might as well get a router.

Not sure where you are located, but check these models out and find a vendor near you.

I have this one. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166074

What kind of computer do you have? If you have a desktop I would use a PCI card instead of USB. Something like this. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166073

Yeah, you can use ICS and set up an ad hoc network on the Wi-Fi side. Having a router would be a lot more convenient and offer more consistency though.

ICS gives you NAT and DHCP, you might be able to bridge the interfaces to remove those layers and have the ad hoc clients on the same Ethernet broadcast domain
