USB wireless dropping out

I purchased a new HP laptop and Netgear wireless router DNG 2000. After a lot of hassle I have the laptop talking to the internet and the printer no problem, I am pleased with the speed, and of course myself for doing it, because I know nothing about networking.
The supplied Netgear router has a USB wireless adapter which I have connected to my old PC. I have this showing a connection but it keeps dropping out every few seconds and connecting again, as show by the icons on the Taskbar. I suspect that this is because the PC has only USB1 and the wireless to USB is 2. Can anyone please enlighten me on this and if there is a fix?
The PC was previously running the internet via a telephone line to a modem next to the computer, ( slowly)

First, try updating the wireless driver as a bad driver will cause that issue. It's also possible that you have issues because of the the usb 1. You would have to get a usb 2.0 adapter card.

If I need to get an adapter card, would it not be better to get a wireless card and forget about the USB wireless?.

If you are really close to the router then yeah, get a adapter card that has an lan connection.

Sorry I mean a wireless card, It was previously running from a telephone modem (slowly). I now have a Netgear N wireless router going to my laptop and I though I could speed the PC internet up by using wireless.

Note the signal strength on the PC is showing good
