I have a dell laptop using windows 7. I need to know how to re-assign a usb port to serial com1 for a usb to serial device. Is there someone that knows how to do this? I have googled, but not luck. The device manager layout looks different on my system.

Once you connect a USB-to-Serial converter it will automatically assign a COM port to it.

It also has to be com1.

It happens in XP as well I believe. Each USB port will have a different COM port number associated with it.
