use monitor as tv

i am new to the forum but not to computers. i have tried with no success to use a monitor as a secondary tv with a dvd player. i got a vga to rca\svideo splitter adaptor and still nothing. i have gotten a new computer and got a larger monitor and want to use my 19" samsung flat monitor with portable dvd player or video game system for my boys or traveling. can this be direct hookup and work or not. what do i need to do to make it work this way. any help or advice greatly appreciated.

I have my 360 and my computer connected to my monitor.

I have a VGA switch box.

The 360 and PC as VGA inputs. And the output is just the monitor.

thanks, but i am not sure people are understanding me. lets say for instance my computer exploded. i have a monitor left. i want to put it directly to a dvd player without anything else involved. no mouse no keybord no software nothing. can this be done

Yes, either with what vinnie107 posted or something similar.

I believe something like this would solve your problem, for a DVD player.

Depending on the console (video game system) that you own, i'm sure you get buy a verity of cables that will do the specific console port to VGA. or again, the switch that was recommended.
