Use of laptop with 1080p TV

I understand that if I use my Bluray player in my laptop and view the film via my 1080p TV the output from the laptop will match the resolution of the TV.

However if I use the TV temporarily as a monitor it will have a width to height ratio of 1.777 but the resolutions on my laptop have width to height ratios of 1.25, 1.333, 1.422 and 1.6.

The best resolution with my laptop is 1440 x 900 (1.422:1) whereas the nearest resolution to 1.777:1 is 1280 x 800 (1.6:1)

What should I use to get the best display?

To be honest, I don't have the slightest clue as to what you're asking or where you're getting your facts... Maybe I'm misreading something...

As long as you have VGA or DVI/HDMI output going to the TV, you could output whatever resolution you want. Most all computers now can handle two separate video outputs, so the one going to the TV could be full 1080p while the internal LCD is still 1440x900. Just select the TV as your primary monitor/output for video playback. I don't think it's as common anymore, but some older cards could only have one video overlay going. So you had to pick between the outputs. In your case, you could probably drag the video over to the TV and blow it up to full screen.

set it to extended display it will work just fine.im on a laptop right now hooked to a 1080p hdtv.the tv's screen is set to 1920x1080,and the laptops monitor is set to 1366x768.so believe me its no big deal.

Thanks to you both.

Yes - I did not explain myself very clearly.

My main concern is that the laptop output will be stretched in such a way as to distort the picture, making it too wide or too tall.

Also I wanted to get the best display on the TV.

As the laptop will only be connected to the TV on rare occasions it is not too important.

I asked the question more out of curiosity than need.

If your laptop's display doesn't match the aspect ratio of 1080p, you will get little black strips ontop and below the video. This, however, does not affect your laptop's output at all, you can change the resolution it outputs to your TV.
