Use only 2 DIMMs of 4 DIMM mobo affect performance?

Hey all,

I was wondering if I could get a response to a technical question. I'm buying two gigs of Corsair XMS2-6400 800mhz memory for my computer. I'm going with a Gigabite p35-d3sr mobo, which has 4 DIMM's for memory.

My question is which setup will give the best performance, do I need to buy 4 memory sticks of 512mb for each of the 4 DIMMs, or can I simple put 1GB sticks into only 2 of the DIMMs and leave the others empty?

I saw a similar thread in the past but cant seem to find it. What do you guys think? Thanks.

Typically it's better to have less "sticks" of RAM in your computer. The impact might be minor, but performance can degrade slightly when using more than two sticks(or one when not using duel channel)

yeah if you have 4 slots for memory then i would just use 2 of them with 1Gig in each so at a later date if you need more memory you could always upgrade.

two sticks because theres room for them to breath. when you have all four sticks they're so close to each other that you would need cooling.

you wouldn't NEED cooling...but cooling becomes more of a necessity than with just 2....same can be said with 1 vs 2 sticks....but yeah u get the point....

and IF there is an actual difference....ur eyes probably wouldn't be able to tell the diff cuz it's still theoretically the same amount of RAM
