I bought a used Buffalo router from ebay long ago and I connect it to the internet right away. It does not come with manual booklet.

I heard that you must reset the router if buying it used... as the previous owner has some ports open which will cause security issues. I am a super low-end user....

How do I reset my router? how do I know if my router are safe?

Plug in the router, on the back there will be a little button and it will say "Reset" above it. Use a pen of something and press it and hold it for 15 seconds.

it does not matter. We dont need to know what ports the other user had open, we just want to return it to factry defaults and let him set it up himself

Ok...I am sorry to mistake then...
But it's always better to find it is it safe first...as he asked in his post as far as I'm concerned...
how do I know if my router are safe
Well if correct ports are open, he may not be Hijacked that easily...

o i see what you mean... however that will just tell him the ports the other user had open. if he does the test after then he will find it is a cheep firewall :D

Hello!
Use this site http://www.yougetsignal.com/openPortsTool/ to find out which ports are open. You can then tell about the results here.
If you are still concerned about being Hijacked, please post your HijackThis lol here and some1 will examine it.
Cheers!

ok I will check this site first then pres sthe reset button on my router... I dont even know if it has that button yet... did not check it as I am not at my primary computer place.

Also is it ok to check on my computer that is not the primary? but it does has the same network.

Do I type in my IP address? or do I leave it as default? it already have numbers in there.

when reset the router.... do I have to config everything all over before I can go in the internet again? or once its reset.... it sno hassle to get on internet.... jus plug and play straight on internet?

That's good. Please check 23 now.
If that one is closed you are safe.

23 is closed.... so now I press the reset button on the router? and once I reset it.... will I still be on the internet? I mena will it be a hassle to get on the internet back? or jus plug and play right away?

When you reset you will have to setup your connection again. Same easy process you should be able to handle it. Btw, I guess you got some instructions, although it's used?

I dont know.... I forgot how I did everything..... I am completely empty.... blank....

Can you give me a super simple intruction?

something like:

1- connect router to modem

2- open blah blah

I'm afraid if I reset it... I will have hard time getting on the net back.

well if you mess up just take it off and return everythign back...

however the easest way to do this is hold the reset butten for 15 sec. wait 1 min. connect the post 1 to your computer and in internet explorer type 192.168.2.1 username admin password password. setup your ip address you want it to have and the wireless id it should have and any security. also change the default password. save everything unplug it and plug the internet into the internet port and port 1 to your computer. reset the dsl/cable box (unlug it for 10 sec) and do the same to the router. that should do it

Is it a wireless router or wired? If it is wired then you shouldn't have to set anything up if you just originally plugged it in and it worked.

it is wireless/wired router but I use it as wired. all my computers are connected wired.

I'll show how the router actually look like when I find a pic off the net.
