Used laptop for internet only ??'s

I'd like to get a used laptop to access the internet only. I want to hook up the video to the tv as well so I will need the appropriate video card.

What are the desired basics of the system to have the cable provided internet run well?

Any suggestions for reliable ways of purchasing a used laptop
 
presario f500 my grandma has is decent vga and s video-hookup nvidia 6100 works in it but it isn't good in terms of battery life, has a full blown athlon 64 i haven't bothered to check what speed though, has 1 gig of mem
 
If you look at store ads you can buy really cheap new ones. I just bought a new Acer 14.1" with a Celeron M 1.86GHz, 1GB DDR2, 120GB HD, 256MB Intel X3100, DVD Burner, and 6 Cell battery for only $399.
