Lately, I cannot log off and switch users. The computer acts as if I didn't select anything.
i have gone into the user accounts and selected use fast user switching, but the checkmark will not last after I close it out, I have used apply options
Any suggestions?

when you look at your account, is administrator checked ?
how is your pc running in general ?
more than likely it is a virus, spyware or trojan

insert your WindowsXP cd ibnto the CD drive, click START - RUN - type 'cmd' - type 'sfc.exe'

That is system file checker, any wondows file that is corrupt of infected will get replaced with the orginal working version. That should fix your problem.

I put the xp cd in ,start/run typed cmd and sfc.exe
A small window came up called c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
showing scannow, scanonce, revert, purgecache, cachesize=x with a list of what each one will do
and below that
c:\doucemts and settings
Is there another step after that/

no no, sorry, my fault there, START - RUN - type 'cmd' - hit ENTER - type 'sfc.exe /SCANNOW'

that should do it.... it should run for a good few mins, anything up to like 25minutes, so go make a cup of coffee or soemthing.

Nope, after typing in sfc.exe/scannow it just repeats itself with c;doucements and settings
I tried 'sfc.exe/scannow' and it says its not an internal or external command.
I tried this with the xp cd in the drive
