User Priviledges

Using Windows XP Home SP3 (32-bit), do you know if its possible to restrict different user priviledges so they can't do certain things such as installing non-common programs?

I know there is the basic option in user accounts to change between administrator or limited account type but you can't really do anything at all with the limited account.

I was wondering if there is another way of just restricting certain things such as the installation of non-common programs e.g. anything that isn't from Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, Mozilla and other popular programs etc but still allowing all other priviledges such as running, editing, saving office programs etc.

I was also interested in some sort of pop-up message for anything that is restricted from being installed with a message to request it from the system administrator so they know they need to ask first and can't just install things.

Thanks for any advice with this,

John

you could google white listing programs that might help you.
to be specific like that would be hard, like only microsoft products etc... give us a little more background like why are you doing this and who are you trying to restrict... are these people computer savvy... are they installing software on your computer to be malicious or are they just clueless and will install 9 IE toolbars because their free web game told them to.

Definitely the latter. I've had so many toolbars, trojans and malware its unbelievable. Also conflicting security and other software installed when there is already good security software running. It's caused conflicts that have stopped the internet from working altogether.

just make them restricted users, if they need something installed then they need to use elevated privileges or log in as a user with administrative rights.

I may be wrong but I think the limited accounts in XP Home don't even allow you to do so much as even e.g. create, save, or modify a Word document?

yeah it would, they cant write to the registry or directly to the c drive but they will be able to create things in their profile...which is where their desktop, my documents etc.. are.
