Using 2nd Router with current setup.

We have a Verizon FIOS BroadBand connection, with wired/wireless router. The PC and Router are in one room at the back-side of the lower level of our home. We are often doing something in our upper level front-side bedroom (either on the laptop, or my IPad), and the signal drops to one bar.

Just this evening, a friend of mine asked if I could use a router that his sister didn't need anymore. It is a 2.4GHz LinkSYS Wireless-G BroadBand router w/SpeedBooster, and I was wondering if I just might be able to boost the upstairs signal with it.

I am about to take it upstairs and plug it in, but think that the procedure may take more steps than that - providing it is possible in the first place.

Advanced thanks.

Is there anyway that you can connect an ethernet cable between the 2 routers? If so, then its quite easy to setup the second router to extend your wireless. If not, then you can still update the firmware on the linksys to dd-wrt and use it as a wireless repeater.

Dang, I am not at home right now. But I will check that out as soon as I get there. Thanks for the quick response. Hope this all works out for us.

I've just got home, and took a quick look at the backsides of the routers. I didn't try anything because of not knowing which Ethernet ports to utilize, on the rear of each respective router. Would it make a difference? Or would it be as simple as going out any of the ports, on the back of the Verizon router, in to either of the same numbered ports on the rear of the LinkSYS? I have extra Ethernet cables, here, so that would be no issue.

Again, advanced thanks.

Well, what you would need to do is take a cable from one of the lan ports on the verizon router to one of the lan ports(not the single internet port) on the linksys router. But before doing that we would need to know what the internal IP address is of the verizon router so we can make sure the ip address of the linksys doesn't match. Other settings need to be changed as well on the linksys router.

If the IP address on your verizon router is 192.168.1.1 then you need to change the IP address of the linksys router to 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.2. The reason why I gave you both numbers is because depending on the verizon router, it may have an issue the third set of numbers being 1 instead of 2. With some att routers, I've had to use the 192.168.2.1 address but with my setup at home, I can use 192.168.1.2. Also turn dhcp off as you only want the main router giving out internal ip addresses. You will need to connect a computer to the linksys router only to configure it, do not connect it to the verizon router until after its configured and settings are saved.

I made this awhile back.
It worked for me.
