Using a backup drive as a public host file server

Couple of question.

Wife's business is related to research. I have a standard LAN setup with a simple 4 Computer bank. We (by much request) want to set up an open file server (we have a lot of files people need access to)

I was considering going with a simple Seagate Central and password protecting then giving the password to those who need it.

But here is what I am looking at. Simply, I need a server that can be used with possibly up to 12 people at once. They probably will not all be downloading at once so pressure on the file server will be four or five max at once.

With the current setup I have business class net (80 down, 12 up) which seems to suffice.

it will only be used for file hosting.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

It sounds like a dedicated file server may be a bit expensive. Unless price isn't a huge issue, I'd look into a dedicated NAS. I'll throw out the name of mine at home, a Synology DS1513+, but they make higher and lower end models depending on your needs.

It allows easy setup, both internal and external, you can share files with people with a temporary password, such as a link for a customer where you only want them to access a particular file and not give them permanent access to your server, etc.

Serrver 2012 Essentials

If you can shell out $500 for software and probably about the same for a decent hardware setup with whatever storage you need. I would suggest Microsoft Server 2012 Essentials.

I am running this at my home for my network, it helps me keep things organized and yet have the versatility of remote access and file shearing from anywhere I need it (mostly to upload my check stubs from work or grab the file I didn't give my laptop enough time to sync while out and about.)

Basic vpn support and a full Microsoft network domain if you need it. At those levels you can have personal file storage and group access with ease.
