Using a fan on pc case

Ok since i have been told to get a fan for my pc case as my graphcs card is overheating, i asked for advice, but i didnt get any so ill put this into this section:

I have been told that i should put a fan into ma case to improve air circulation. so here are some questions:

where should i put the fans? i have an area at the back of the pc with air holes innit with 4 srew holes which are 80mm apart of each other. do i get a 80mm fan and put it there?

also which way should i make the fan blow? make it blow away air from the case outside ? or from outside inwards the case?

also you see those slots on the bottom of the pc, the ones where you can put additional components such as modems, wireless, hubs, etc is it helpful to take off those metal plates so that more air comes in? ( i am sorry of my explanation is shitty)

also what else is there to think about? also by how much does one extra fan reduce the temperature?

any help would be appreciated:)

That vent in the rear of your case where the 80mm fan could seat is the exhaust, you'd want to blow air from inside of your case out of that hole.

There should also be an intake for a fan to sit in, located in the front of your case near where your hard drives mount.. though, you may not be able to use it depending on whether there is a vent in the front bezel for air to come in.. if there is, that fan would pull air into your case.

As for the extra PCI bays in your case, this is what I did with mine;

This tiny mod dropped my 7600GT's temps from 57-59c idle to 51-53c idle.. the fan pulls air in from the outside.

I have air conditioning in my home, which probably plays a huge roll in how low my temps went when I performed this mod.

oh cool, btw how big is the fan which is around yor pci bays? ty very much for takign your time helping me :)

Here is a pic of the iside of ma pc if it helps anyone:

well the fron of pc had three holes where there are 3 blue leds, but i cant fit a fan to that, but i do have a fan for a ma harddrive (which is think is quite weird lol)

The fan is a 70mm AVC (from an AMD X2 Stock HSF)... it's actually pretty silent.

You should pick up some zip ties and clean the wiring up in your case, it'll help improve air-flow.

If you choose to install a fan like I did, be careful.. be sure it's mounted nice a snug so it can't come loose and nip your card, but make sure the blades aren't rubbing anything on or in the PCI bays.

oh ok btw u c the if ia m goign to fit a fan how is it going to be connected to electricity? is it those lil pin things?

I used the 3pin intake fan plug on my motherboard.. but you could use a 70mm fan which has a 4pin molex connector and plug it into one of the accessory leads inside of your case.

Something like this would work fine.

Something like this would work fine as well, and this is the type of fan I use, just a different make/model.

yup, from the picture, it looks like a 80mm fan mount.

It should be blowing air out of the case.

You could take it out, but that'll also let more dust get in. Generally, the air is sucked in from the front of the PC and expelled through the back. So letting the back hot air back into the PC doesn't really do much.

It's hard to say, as long as you have good airflow your case should stay relatively cool. Remember, front intake, top exhaust, back exhaust, side intake or exhaust.

Heat rises, cool air falls.... you seem to have forgotten that.

The exhaust is in the top of the case on the rear panel, as hot air moves out, it rises.. installing an intake fan on the bottom rear panel will pull in cooler air, as cool air rests below warm air.

There are PCI fans that you can buy that blows air towards the GFX...

Thats an large drop for an "silent" fan...

Or, Hot glue + 80/70 mm fan... It only takes one slot... and gives an more direct flow toward the card..

True, but it's always messing up the general air flow as you have a fan blowing air from the back into the case. Maybe it'll work better if you take that fan and angle it so it blows air onto the card from the middle of the case and have that hot air directly expelled through the pci slots.

i've heard pci fans don't do much... i'd go for as many case fans as you can get in there... that just keeps cool air flowing in and hot air being pushed out

The setup I have works flawlessly, and I don't see how it could mess up air flow in the case.. cool air comes in the bottom, the GPU fan picks it up, cools off my card and blows it out the side of my case ( I have a huge vent on the side of my case, most people do ).. some cool air gets blown right passed the GPU fan, since the GPU fan is much smaller than the rear-intake-fan and can't pick it all up, that air passes through the case and gets caught in the exhaust fan path, blows out the back and again, rises.

As for those recommending a PCI slot fan, they're junk.. they're half the length of most video cards, and the fan almost always blows the air at the end of the card opposite to the GPU intake fan, otherwise most of them pull the hot air from inside the case out of the built-in vent.. which deprives the GPU cooler of air in turn causing your card to overheat, or at least get more-hot... anyone recommending them is obviously an amateur.. and hot gluing a case fan to the PCI bay and aiming it up towards the card is only going to cool off, I have to say it again?, the side of the card opposite to the GPU.. the GPU fan won't pick up the air before the air gets warm, and using warm air defeats the purpose.

My way forces the cool air all the way to a point where the GPU fan can suck it in and cool the GPU off. Trust me, my logic is dead on.
