Using a Monitor for TV?

About 10 minutes ago the TV blew up. It was an old one that we borrowed from a friend so not a big deal (well, maybe for the friend...). But now I am trying to work out how to watch TV.

I am using Tatasky+ which is a DTH TV service in India. The signal is picked up by a satellite dish and decoded by a set-top box which then plugs into the TV.

However, the set-top box has an s-video port so I was wondering if it would be possible, as I have an s-video cable, to watch TV using the computer monitor if the set-top box was connected through s-video to the computer.

I just did some research and someone said that the s-video connection allows you to use your computer with a TV, can it be done the other way round?

Am I gonna need a TV Tuner? Shouldn't the set-top box act as the tuner?

Thanks

You will need a tuner or capture card of some sort. Yes, the set-top box will act as the tuner but you still need something to digitize the signal for the computer. Either that or there are some tuners that connect through the monitor and essentially turn your monitor into a TV. From that point you could plug the tuner into the input on the device.

Ok well thanks, but I think we will have to buy a new TV. Possibly a 42" LCD, so it's not all bad :)

I watch TV at my computer monitor all the time - through my comcast cable box as a tuner to powercolor tv tuner card ( 25 bucks ). Use Coaxial input though - not s-video. My understanding - is hte S-video inputs give you a lesser picture quality.

Where to install this one (comcast cable box) as a tuner?
