Using a socket 771 Xeon in a 775 board?

So i was looking around ebay for some 775 quad cores... and then this socket 771 xeon quad core pops up. is there any chance i would be able to use one like that in my motherboard? or is it not worth trying?

I'm trying to save up some monay and the xeon's seem to be cheaper...

And what;s with all the expensive 775 quads on ebay? there are Q9550's going for $300AUD when you can buy a core i5 750 for $250...

Nope

My guess would be that the Q9550 is still a great Socket 775 CPU (similar performance to the i5 750 as well). There are quite a few of those motherboards around. Some folks may want to upgrade without going to the new Core iX socket - thus requiring a new motherboard. They are also not being made in quantity any longer (if at all?), thus decreasing supply and driving up the cost.

Yeah but i can pick up a Q9300 for sub-$120 AUD, so why is the Q9550 so expensive? It has double the cache and a higher clockspeed but that's it...

Like I was saying, supply and demand along with processor yields will affect the unit's price. This is normal - especially if you are referring to the Q9550S (a lower TDP variant).

Why is the i7-860 nearly half the price of the i7-870 when the clock speed is only a few MHz lower? Same reason. Higher speed CPUs have lower yields due to more stringent tolerances. The manufacturer charges a premium for the better parts.

Well I'm getting a Q8200 for $100 USD now so it's no issue :)

Your E6300 at 3.8ghz would be better for your needs than a Q8200. On the board you have, you'll be lucky to get much over 3.2ghz with a Q8200.

The Q9400 is the middle ground, and goes for around $140-160 USD typically.
