Using an external drive via the router

You can access it from any computer on your network.
You can possibly set up a WAN connection to it so you can access it from outside your network.

It all depends on the router and the drive. Some routers have special software to allow you to create users and give them read/write permission.

I'm wondering about this too. I will be buying a new router to replace my WRT54GL which still functions, but just want to upgrade. What I want to do is share files on P2P with an external USB stick.

Do you need NetBIOS on in order to read and write to a USB connected drive? I block NetBIOS in the router flashed with DD-WRT.

WRXGuy1 would know more about it. I have a router that supports it, but have never used it, whereas he has (and may even still) used it.

I have an ASUS RT-N56U.
