Using an old router for a guest network

I have an old Netgear PR2000 router that's just sitting around and was thinking about setting up a second network that I could turn on during parties and when having guests over. I've done some google searching on it, but really haven't found clear guidance on how to set it up.

I was thinking on doing a switch right off the modem into the two routers, but I haven't seen any examples of that. I've also seen LAN to WAN connections linking the old router off the main one.

Any suggestions or guidance is appreciated.

You'd need some kind of isolation policy, whether it be via ACL or similar.

What other equipment do you have in your network? Usually this would be easiest to segment out as VLANs and implement an access list to reject traffic (or even a separate physical interface on the router or similar). If you just plopped an open SSID onto your normal network, now anybody can access your entire environment, as you're aware.

Well, you're talking a bit over my head. I know just enough about networking to be dangerous.

I'm currently running an Arris SB6190 modem into a Netgear X6 AC3200 Nighthawk router. The router has a guest feature, which may end up being the path of least resistance. Just the standard stuff on the home network...printer, roku, etc. it's mainly the network storage that I want to restrict. The main issue is that I don't want to have the guest network available unless I have guests over. It seems to be less of a hassle to just power on a second router than to go into the main routers settings every time.

It looks like the guest network has some WPA/PSK functions to it, I'd probably roll with that and just give your guests the password. You can untick the box for 'allow guest to access my local network' and it will simply limit them to the internet, instead.

Probably the easiest solution, then you could even leave it up without worrying about it being an open SSID.
