Using an Xbox (original) controller?

I have read that Xbox 360 controllers can simply be plugged in, but what about original Xbox controllers? I only own the original and plan on buying an adapter like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-Adapter-Controller-Cable-For-Microsoft-XBOX-to-PC_W0QQitemZ250547636532QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVideo_Games_Accessories?hash=item3a55cd8934#ht_3099wt_1165

Would using an original controller be just as easy as the 360 controller? If not, what would I need to do?
I've used my Wii Classic controller through GlovePIE, but I really couldn't get perfect results.

i've done it. an xbox controller is a usb controller with a different plug. you can cut the cord and cut a usb cord and crimp the wires together. they are the same colors and everything.

I did it on an xp computer before SP3 and I did need drivers. Forgot about that. I don't think you would with sp3 and above though. If you do, google "xbcd". Its the driver I used.

I just remembered, I'm fairly sure the xbox controller actually has 5 wires not 4. The fifth is a different color and you just ignore it. My guess is it has to do with the mic that plugged into the controller and memory card, etc which you wouldnt use with a pc anyways.

Good luck in windows vista or 7, its a pain to use xbcd drivers due to driver signing requirements. I had to enable test mode in 7 in order to get the drivers working.

The xbox controller only has 4 wires, its a standard usb cable with a proprietary connector. However you need to match the pinout, not the colors of the wires as the wires do not always match up depending on what you get a usb adapter from.

Its more work then its worth....would be happier buying a 360 controller and bypassing the hassle.
