using gimp- when you have changed an area

When you have erased then inserted new info into a selected box on gimp how do you then move on to another area for editing? My problem is the area I have just edited still has the moving boundary box ( i guess this means a selected area) and I want to leave that area and move on how do I do that?

I don't use GIMP but have you tried clicking inside or outside the selection, or hitting Esc or Enter or selecting another tool. You could also try Ctrl+Shift+a which is "select none".
