Using Range Extender and Router separately

So I have a big house (or a bad router), and I´m using a Range Extender. The thing is, when I´m upstairs, the range extender signal sucks. The question is this: Can I choose to use the Extender when downstairs and the router when upstairs? Or do I always have to use the Extender signal?

Wait, I´m sorry. I set up the extender again and I renamed the network. Now both show up. Thanks for the help!

Access point. You can broadcast the same SSID across different access points.

Range extenders rebroadcast your traffic on the same frequency and degrade performance to a large degree.

Oh yes I know. The thing is, my PC is too far from the router, so if I want to connect a wire to my extender that means I'll need to have the extender close to my PC right? By definition the extender will be far from the router and will be completely useless. Or am I missing something?

Extenders are garbage. Which is why Beers suggested an access point instead.

Well this thing can be configured as an AP. Does that mean I have to use a wire to connect?

Yes already did it. I'm using it as an AP. It is much more stable and faster. Even though is further apart from the router works better. Thank you all.
