Using thermal compounds on your GPU

My GPU started to show some small artifacts in crysis. Knowing this could be heat related i opened up CCC to see my GPU at 72*C, and around 51*C while idling. Much too hot in my opinion, but i did overclock my card from 776mhz to 850mhz (core) and from 900mhz to 950mhz (double both, DDR memory of course :) )

I took out my card and took all the heatsinks off. The GPU itself had some crappy looking silicone paste, and a small-ish amount at that. (just a little less than normal)
I cleaned the compound off and applied the last of my IC7 (saving my AS-5 for later :D thanks bomberboysk) to the GPU and some small drops to the thermal pads.

to cut a long story short my GPU temps went down to 42*C idle and not higher than 58*C load by just replacing some thermal compound. Of course you can use any compound you want.

My point is that if you have some thermal paste sitting around you may as well use it on your GPU and extend it's life a little, or squeeze some more overclocking out of it! ;)

Dont forget that you'll want to use a nonconductive compound on your GPU, such as shin etsu, MX-2, OCZ Freeze, or ceramique.

No problem about the as5 btw;)
