Various problems...

Hi. I posted this on another forum but so far no one has replied. I really need help...

So here's the problem. For more than a week now, I've been getting pop-ups-- mostly those that inform you of adware, ect. I have a pop-up blocker that has always worked until this point so I thought that I must have a virus then. Well I figured something was obviously wrong anyway.

I should mention at this point that my computer is a couple of years old now, and I've never encountered problems in the past. I have virus scanners that have always served me well.

I scanned for viruses, obviously. It got results as it often does, that were apparently 'fixed.' But I don't think it found anything that was causing the problems. Because it wasn't just pop-ups, but freezing and overall slowness too (though that appeared to be brought on by the pop-ups. Like it would freeze a lot when I tried to close the damn things).

I started getting desperate so I thought maybe it was just internet explorer that was shit with pop-ups and whatnot (lol I don't know. Again, desperate) so I downloaded Firefox (which I've had in the past and has worked) but whenever I'd click it, it wouldn't open... so I got this one I remember a friend mentioning in the past, Opera. I installed it just last night and right away, things were better. No more pop-ups-- AT ALL-- and it was all just going faster... the internet at least. Everything else was still a bit slower and weird but I could look past it with the internet running so smoothly, for the time being...

Then today my sister turns on the computer (it's mine but she uses it on occasion when she is here) and there's nothing but a black screen before a message appears that says;

An unauthorized change was made to your license. To keep your system safe, you must go online and validate that your software is genuine.

So then I have to click the go online part, and the internet (Opera) opens, and so far it's the only way to GET into the internet... and when I close that window, windows will automatically log off. There are various accounts on this computer, and it happens in each of them (more than one are admins). I've tried all the different safe modes and I think I would basically stay in there if it wasn't so limited... I mean, I can open things like the net fine in that, and other programs but for example, it bothers me that there's no sound.

I've been doing nothing but trying to find solutions for hours. I've come close a few times, with posts on other sites having problems sounding similar to mine, but none have helped. One thing many posts suggested was re-installing vista but I really don't want to have to do that (and I'm not exactly sure where the heck I put that disk. So yay). I'm wondering if it's getting worse because I tried writing a post like this a few minutes earlier and it logged itself out without me doing anything.

My dad's computer has had this problem once a few years ago, with the message about windows being genuine. And since I've been looking it up today I've realised it's apparently all too common. As far as I remember, his sort of just magically fixed itself. I'm fairly certain he just kept closing the messages and they went away-- but maybe I'm wrong. That seems far too easy. Mine is much worse. The desktop is nothing but BLACK and there's no icons obviously.

I should also add that there is no taskbar, and pressing the button with the window's logo on it does absoultely nothing.

Oh, and earlier I used something, I forget what it was, but it was to 'determine' if my windows copy was genuine and it said it wasn't... which I just can't understand.

I'm not sure what to do. I don't get why I'd suddenly have this problem when my computer isn't even new for one thing. I'm confused as to what the cause is. I mean, is this connected to all the pop-ups I'd been recieving earlier, or did it just happen around the same time? Any help is appreciated, because I pretty much suck with this.

Today before I got the chance to log in, I got this message:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}

I turned the computer off, started it up again and was able to log in but there is still no desktop, and it was just like yesterday in only letting me open the internet from the stupid 'windows is not genuine' message. I don't know what to do.

When you get to your desktop with no icons do ctrl-alt-del to bring up task manager and on the application tab click on new task at bottom and type "explorer" without the quotes, and hit ok. Doing this should bring up your icons now.

Please follow the instructions in this thread and post the requested logs for us back here.
