I am not sure where to put this exactly, but is it possible to get a free 10 person ventrilo server? or do you have to pay no matter what? Thanks.
 
Yes, if you host it yourself, they allow you to host up to 10 (or maybe just 8 - don't quite remember) people. The server download is on their website. Download it, fiddle with ports and IP stuff and you should be good to go. People should be able to connect to your IP:port if everything is forwarded correctly.

It has been a year or two since I've done this but you could also look into teamspeak because I don't think they limit the number of people you can host for free. But they may have changed that.

Thanks for the help guys.

As for ventrilo over skype, it is kind of hard to skype multiple friends at once while playing a video game online with them haha. I am not using it for face-to-face communication, but rather team communication on games. Thanks though.
 
If you are hosting it yourself, TS would be the better option if there are quite a few of you because on the free version you can host up to 30 (may be 20) people, which is a lot more than vent allows for. You also don't get the sounds when you want to talk or when someone leaves or when some other crap happens, you only get told when people join/leave.

It is also much more easy to admin I have found than vent is, and much easier to join and set up favourites and what not.

I've used both extensively and honestly, I can't find anything that would make Vent better than TS
 
I have always preferred ventrilo over teamspeak for some reason. I guess it was growing up with it back in my WoW days with my guildies. I will have to look into teamspeak though. Thanks.
 
Sorry for the re-bump, but now that my front panel headset port is working I am trying to set up a team speak 3 server. I have the client and server 64bit versions installed, but I do not know how to actually go about setting the free server up. I do believe I have to allow access through my router, but beyond that I'm not sure what to do. Thanks for any help!

Edit: Do I need to forward my ports? I have found my default gateway number.

I am trying the vent 8 client server. I need help forwarding the port for netgear. I have typed in 3784 to 3784 as the start and end ports. How do I get it to allow other people to connect to my router? I can connect.

EDIT: I got it to work now. Finally found a great youtube video
