I have been able to configure a few different brand routers to work with a comcast modem.But a old former wireless verizon router i can t get it to work. Is there something different that you have to do with the verizon router. When i hook it up and go to my laptop it says you are now connected but when i go to internet explorer and try to open it up it says cannot display page. All i did with the verizon router was just put in a ssid name

Well it sounds like you have it setup wrong, like its not talking with your modem correctly... if you can hook your computer directly to your modem and get out then you need to setup your router similar to that, like if it gets an IP from DHCP then try setting your router up to obtain an ip by dhcp.

Give us a bit more info on how your network is setup.
