Vertical Lines appearing on Mac OS X 10.4.11 monitor

I am having trouble with my mac computer. It has developed vertical coloured lines on the monitor, apple have said that although my computer model has a known problem with the lines mine does not fall within the serial numbers so it cannot be replaced.

Has anyone else had this problem.

If that is being seen on a totally brand new monitor out of the box they should replace it or provide a refund when returned regardless of series just from being a defective product. Was it ordered direct or through a dealership?
