I have a DELL XPS that was given to me however the person that had it doesn't have the recovery disks for it. I purchased Windows 98 OS for it because thats what origionally come with it, but it doesn't seem to work. The installation goes in OK but the Product Code that came with it doesn't work. So I tryed another Code Number that came with my other computer and it opened up, but the screen on my monitor looks like it's operating in the safe mode and when I try to increase the pixels it won't let me. Another thing it does is the modem doesn't work, I downloaded the driver from a site but the modem just can't be found by the system. I guess my question would be is it possible for the OS to be a bad disk or maybe the computer is bad?
you reformatted and everything right? Also try reseating anything in the computer that is giving you problems, clean it off if it's in horrid condition, reset BIOS by clearing CMOS and try again. sometimes it just takes a reseat or CMOS reset.
Get something like CHKDSK or WDCLEAR and run through the drive with the scanning options. it will check to see if you have any bad sectors or anything.
Can you test the gfx card in another computer? it might be somewhat impaired.
I bet the computer is fine, it's just a small hardware conflict. Also test modem in another PC if possible.
