Hi all, new member looking to try my hands at building a computer. Not very savy, but going to try to save some money, learn a little, and hopefully have some fun. I am looking for a fast rig with HD video capabilities for some video editing. Mostly the computer will be used for surfing the internet, listening to music, and watching/editing video. Not much of a gamer. The little research I have done leads me to wanting an Intel however not sure if i7 920 or E8400 would be more suitable. Other than that I have no clue! If someone could help me come up with a parts list for between $800 and $1200 I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks a lot, look forward to the advice.

Well hi there! I'm new too, and I'm going to build a pc.

I have had some people help me out with parts and I'll post what I got...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811146047 - $100

Subtotal: $1,056.00

This computer is mostly going to be for gaming, but it would work just fine with whatever you would want to do I suppose. You might be able to get some cheaper stuff if you will just be doing the stuff you said...

But take a look at the stuff.

You could use this, or pick completely different hardware!

I just went on Newegg.com and started picking out stuff I like. I decided to build a computer like a week ago and my build has changed probably everyday, but I made myself stay with the one I posted above:D

I think I'm going to get these, total comes out to $1045 (if you get the CPU and Mobo in a combo on newegg.com).

Dont touch a rosewill power supply with a 10 ft pole, get one of these, $99 after rebate, $119 before:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341003

That heatsink will not work with that motherboard, you need a heatsink that supports LGA1156, or a motherboard with socket 775 heatsink holes such as this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188054

And then this would be a better heatsink:

Or spend a few bucks more:

Thank you kind sir. I would have gone off and bought stuff that didn't work together.

Thanks

Still having trouble deciding between i7, core 2 duo, and now i5. Which is the best all around? Also, the coolermaster HAF seems to get the best reviews, is this the right case to go with this build and one of these cpu's? Appreciate all the help.

The i5 750 Lynnfield Quad-Core is a very powerful processor. It is better than the i7 processors in my opinion because spending a lot on a computer that is going be very obsolete within five years anyway doesn't make much sense. The i5 750 processor is only $210 presently. The lowest model i7 processor is $70 more in cost than the Intel i5.

Thats a bit of a stretch, anything bought today, by the standards for 5 years from now will be obsolete. i5/i7 or AM3. 5 years is a long time in technology. Will you still be able to use it, yes probably. Will it will be technical obsolete, yes.

Is the i7 920 processor worth the extra cost for the amount of processing power that you would gain over the Intel Core i5 750 Lynnfield in your opinion?

That doesnt have anything to do with what I said. Going by your 5 year plan, anything you buy will be obsolete is the point. 5 years from now is to far down the road to make a judgement on a processor when either one you buy will be considered crap by then.
