Very New to Computers

Hi!
I want to build a gaming pc for myself. I am willing to spend around 800-900$ Australian dollars on it. I know that pretty much everything is plugged into the motherboard.
Are all PC parts universal so I can buy almost any thing for the build?
Also by spending about $850 Australian dollars on it when the time comes, how much fps do you think ill be getting on the latest games and when would I have to upgrade?

CPU + MB = The cpu chosen dictates the motherboards socket design requirement. Intel 1155 and AMD AM3+ are examples.
Memory = DDR3 memory is the standard and the most common speed used is 1600mhz due to its pricepoint performance.
ATX references a size. So does m(micro)ATX or mATX which is smaller than ATX.
The case needs to be able to accept the mb size. If the case specs says mATX for mb, but doesn't list ATX, then ATX mb won't fit that case. Most mid size cases will fit either. The case specs will also have the power supply size that will fit. Most all cases you'll choose from will take the standard ATX ps and the ps will have the nessecary power cables for all the components. The mb should come with 2 data cables, 1 for hdd, 1 for burner.
For hard drive, sata interface, 3.5", 7200rpm are the most common for desktops.
 
Mid tower. and its Mid like middle, not midi like you record music with.

there are some very good mid tower cases that are fairly cost efficient. The HAF 912 is what I use and it has plenty of room and places to tuck away cables.

Well, full is better for airflow and higher end xl or extended motherboards. Full and super is also better for airflow, I think if I had a mid I wouldnt of oc mine to 3 ghz, and sometimes full and super are the only ones that will fit large cpu coolers, like a noctura nh d14.

I too would suggest a mid/midi-tower. They're just the right size, not too big, not too small, and crucially not too heavy to move around. Sometimes full tower cases can be a bit too tall and heavy. Midi-towers do offer good airflow too.

Not always. Also, like I said, hi performace parts like lots of good aftermarket coolers and xl or extended motherboards wont fit in most mid towers.
 
As the OP is looking to spend $800-900AUD, I doubt he's going to be buying E-ATX boards or long graphics cards. The majority of aftermarket CPU cooler solutions will fit in the midi-tower cases, and if you get a decent midi-tower case with the correct number of fans configured in the correct way airflow will be good.
 
Mid towers are good for cooling. My 50 dollar case has really good cooling for how cheap it was. If my cable management was halfway decent it would be even better. Full is better for that but mid is fine too. It's those OEM towers with one 80mm fan that you want to worry about.
