I have a custom gaming pc. AMD athlon x64 x2 5600+ cpu, 2gb ram, XFX geforce 8600gt PCIE graphics. and so on. I am also using the windows XP x64 edition OS. A few days ago my on board sound stopped working. i reinstalled the drivers which cleared the problem but after about a day i turned on the computer and again no sound device installed when i try to play soemthing. i went to device manager to find its totaly BLANK! not a device group or a device to be seen. yet internet works fine. so i formatted the hard drive on the OS partition. and reinstalled windows xp x64. all was well again after doing so and after installing my drivers the system ran better than ever. until today i turned it on, went to Divx player to play a movie located on the D partition. i dragged the players windows to the center of the screen and immediatly after doing so it seemed as if someone unplugged the machine. i turned it back and and it did it again. everytime i drag divx player it immediatly shuts the computer off like i unplugged it. and also to accompany this my device manager is again blank. and i have no sound. any help would be greatly appreciated as it is the holidays and im sort of strapped for cash. thanks in advance

Next time the computer crashes do the following right after reboot:

Go to your Control Panel

Click on "Administrative Tools"

Click on "Event Viewer"

Click on "Windows Logs"

Click on "System"

Look for a red icons with exclamation points

Copy the details of the error codes (if there is more than one) and paste here on the website

ok i tried that. and upon clicking on the system in event viewer i get the error message "Unable to complete the operation on "System". The interface is unknown". I also have noticed in addition to my device manager being blank, My Computer takes a very long time to load, u see a flashlight searching icon for about 1 minute before it comes up. And the only program that shuts down the machine when dragged is Divx player.
