Vga in and Dvi-d in help

I recently purchased a 23 inch widecreen lcd Acer monitor and I'm actually not sure how to go about the ports. My old monitor just had a vga plug in and that was it. With the new monitor I have HDMI, dvi-d in, vga in. My graphics card has two slots that fit for the dvi-d connector. Also the graphics card came with a head attachment that converts the standard vga to a dvi-d slot. My question is do I use both of these and connect both the vga in and dvi-d in to the graphics card? I figured I do connect the hdmi, but wasnt sure if dvi-d and vga are basically pick one or the other. Any help as to how these work and what specifically they do would be great. Thanks
 
You can only use one port on your monitor at a time. DVI is better and you can get a higher resolotion then VGA. And the second port on your card is if you want to setup dual monitors, if you hook it up one monitor to port 2, then you won't get anything. And the converter that came with your card is in case your monitor only has VGA, not both VGA and DVI. Those extra ports are just there for greater flexibility, so hooking up two ports at once won't get you anywhere. And VGA is analog, and DVI and HDMI are digital, and HDMI has the ability to carry both an audio and video signal over a single cable.

just use one of the dvi connectors and go straight to the tv. like jluchinki said, the second one is for if you want to use a second monitor. are you planning on using a second monitor at all?
