VGA vs. DVI

My 22" Acer Widescreen monitor supports both VGA and DVI as does my rig. I don't know much about video, so this is why I ask the following:

I now have the monitor hooked up via VGA. If I get a DVI cable, will I have better video/resolution/picture?? I'm pretty sure only a graphics card that outdoes my onboard video could really improve video...so that's why I said resolution and picture too, cuz I have no idea if switching to DVI connection would improve anything whatsoever.

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

DVI is digital and VGA is analog. I would buy a DVI cable. They're not that much. Don't be fooled by really expensive ones. The signal is digital so there will be no difference between a cheap one and an expensive one.
