I was looking at the dvd external burner here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827191011
I want a dvd burner so I can turn vhs tapes into dvd's. The dvd burner seems to be good but what else will i need? I have a tv tuner with input (yellow white and red) hookups so i can record vhs tapes on my hard drive already as mpg files. Would i need to buy software to turn the mpg to vob or whatever dvd players use? Will i be able to create a menu with that program? Also, what is the standard resolution for dvd movies?

you will need software to do it provided you can rip the files from VHS to your computer. Nero will do it as well as a few others, Don't know of any free ones

you can buy dvd vcr players that will convert from dvd to vcr and vice versa. all you have to do is put in the dvd and the tape and press a button.

Or if you want to go a cheaper route, Nero Express can create menus for your DVD and VCD movies.

But nero takes alot of space up for menus .. i know a programe ill look for it . to make menus quick n easy without much space

Ok, thanks. What do you think about the dvd burner i selected? I want an external one and i dont need one w/ dual layer or anything like that.

k. anyone know the standard dvd resolution?
720x480.

if you already have a program for capturing your analog video to mpeg all you need now is DVD authoring software, if you want a good program for authoring DVDs that will give you the ability to create very advanced and completely customized menus, navigation, buttons and etc......., then what ever you do don't get any of the following: Roxio, Pinnacle, Magix, Nero, Show biz, and a few others, yes they will all allow you to create DVDs and they may all claim to have the ability to create advanced and custom menus, but I wouldn't take there word for it! basically one of the best DVD authoring softwares is DVD Lab Pro, and you can download a fully functional 30 day trial of DVD Lab Pro, which I highly recommend doing! you've got nothing to lose, once you've used DVD Lab you won't be able to use any thing else, trust me it's that good:cool:

Good Luck and HAPPY authoring:)

I bought TV card to do this once, nothing expensive but the capture was awful and i ended up taking it back. If you want a decent capture you have to have an excellent ( and probably expensive) TV card, lots of free hard drive space, and a fast processor. (you'll probably need quite a bit of ram to).
