Victim of Phishing?

Hi there.

About two weeks ago, I woke up and wanted to check Facebook on my BlackBerry device. To my amazement, it asked me to reinsert my username and password, which I did. It said that I had entered an incorrect username or password. "But, I couldn't have. I logged into Facebook using that exact password last night!" I thought to myself. Still on my phone, I tried logging in via the native browser. Still no luck. I then thought to send instructions to my email address to reset my password. I then used my notebook to log into my email. Astonishingly, my password wouldn't work for my email either! Stupidly, my email and Facebook passwords are exactly the same. I tried resetting my email's password, but it sent instructions to an old email address which I no longer know the password to. How convenient. I had to contact Facebook, which took about about a week to accomplish in giving ID and information about me to reset my password to a different email account. This different email account had a different password which was good, so when I changed my Facebook password, it was a unique one which I did not use for anything else.

Yesterday, I was on Facebook and my email account alike. Throughout the time of looking back at my recovered account, I noticed that about only 1/5 of my photo albums remained as if someone had deleted them. Back to what was happening yesterday, I logged out of my email and Facebook (as I always do) and used CCleaner (which I use about 10 times a day to clear my caches). This morning, I am now very surprised to find out that I can no longer log into my email or Facebook account. I really cannot put my finger on anything, but it seems as though I may have some sort of keylogger/virus etc. on my machine. I have the latest version of Kaspersky, but I did a scan a few days ago and it found nothing. I understand that modern viruses are 'polymorphic' which changes their identity slightly to avoid detection more. Are there any other precautions I should look out for? How can I stop myself being phished? I really don't want to do another reinstall of Windows 7 since I have had to go through all of that trouble about two months ago and really wouldn't want to repeat it again. I have now lost two Hotmail accounts which I have very important emails, now gone. I can't imagine what people would want to do with my emails and Facebook account. What drives people to do this?

Thanks for any advice.

Yes, it is very possible to have your facebook account hacked. You may want to change the setting to where you can only access the secured site of facebook(https)

Log onto facebook, click on your account, click on account settings then click on security on the left, then change whatever settings you feel is necessary to secure your login and account. Definately change secure browsing to enabled.

If you think you may be infected then do the following.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com. If you are still having issues running rkill then try downloading these renamed versions of the same program.

EXPLORER.EXE
IEXPLORE.EXE
USERINIT.EXE
WINLOGON.EXE

But DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

When the hijackthis log appears in a notepad file, click on the edit menu, click select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Come back to your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Hi there.

Thanks for your reply. I am out at the moment but I sahll continue with your instructions as soon as I get back in a few hours. Just posting to update that my final email address has now had its password changed and it's a unique password as well. This is getting out of hand. I'll post the logs of MBAM and HijackThis as soon as possible.

The questions I'm asking are:
Why would anyone want to gain access to my Facebook account?
Why would anyone want to gain access to my email accounts?
Why would anyone want to do anything like this?

I have dislike for a few people I know, but I do not wish to gain access to their personal life.

I will make new accounts after I run the programs and post logs.

Thanks.

The simple answer to all 3 questions is..... wait for it.....

To infect other computers. Hotmail and yahoo email account passwords get hacked all the time. Then they go in and send out spam emails to all the users contacts.

I don't see any issues with your logs. I recommend though still changing your security options on facebook.

My Facebook account's password had been changed again when I had my email addresses had been taken. I've made a new account with Gmail with a very obsure password. I'll see if that will be taken victim. I will have to recover my account via sending Facebook my passport I'd and testimony from certain friends as I did last time to recover it. I'll post back if it happens yet again.

Cheers for the consideration though!

I have managed to retrieve all three of my hacked accounts by contacting the correct customer support. I have changed each of their passwords with obscure symbols, capital letters and numbers. The trouble now is finding out how to change my security question on Facebook. various sources state that you slick on Account -> Account Settings and then the security question option should be there. I have looked at both the General and Security tabs but cannot find the option for it.

Thanks.
