Video card and Processor installation questions

I have just received my proc and gpu I ordered.

CPU question:

I have a 2.6ghz dual core celeron going into my mother board. The chip slipped in just fine.

However, the cooling fan that came with it does not use screws like my 2.2 ghz celeron single core fan did. It has this plastic points that look like they fit into a hole. And when I push from the top they expand is if to lock themselves in. I tried pushing these into my screw holes but they appear to be too big I think. Unless I am not pushing hard enough in fear of snapping my mobo.

Should I just use my old fan? Is that okay? Really don't think I should have to buy a new one since I just paid for a proc that I would assume would come with a fan that would fit all mobo's that support it.

Video Card Question:

I just grabbed a sapphire radeon 6770, slipped it in the slot. When I get my psu in on Monday to power these upgrades, I assume the video card will not work until I install the cd that came with it?

Ram Question:

Heck, while I am at it, is it better to have two 2gb sticks of ram, rather than a 1gb and a 2gb? Seems like it would be better to have two sticks of the same size.

The four points on the cpu fan will have arrows, make sure they are set to lock.

The graphics card should work as soon as you install it, but you won`t get the full performance until you install the drivers.

They don't seem to fit in the screw holes. I have tried pushing them in while in the lock and unlocked position.

It is a black point but no it is not sticking out. I also am nervous about how much force to use when pushing. I don't want to break my mother board.

I have the fan so it will sit there, but I am not confident it will stay. These things definitely don't fit the hold.

\/ <--------- that is what the pins look like but they only go about half way up the V before the needle pops out. It locks the fan in place but it doesn't feel as sturdy as the other and I don't believe the fan is touching the cpu.

yes I did, the two fans look much different. Will it do the job? I don't see why they didnt give me a fan that would fit into my mobo. The option for screws would be nice.

Also still need the other two questions answered. pretty please.

If your motherboard has screws holes on it then you can't use the plastic push pins on the new heatsink/fan, you will have to use the original heatsink/fan.

However, you really aren't gonna get that much of performance gain going from a single core celeron to a dual core celeron.

When I posted in a previous thread the specs of my mother board, it was told to me to get this proc and this vid card if I was going to update via this mobo. I don't see how I won't get gain if I am getting .4 ghz more and dual core.

Thanks for the info on the cpu fan. Will the old one work fine? Should I be worried>

Because a celeron processor, even the dual core celeron isn't made for more then entry level computing, like email and websurfing. If you get into gaming then the dual core celeron won't even make the minimum requirements.

First and foremost thank you for all the info, I am still confused though.

What should i have bought for my lga 775 mobo? And won't the updated vid card to a radeon 6770 make a difference? I had a bunch of people tell me that proc would be okay. I specifically asked for an upgrade that would let me play league of legends with a better frame rate than 15, and diablo III.

Would this have been better?

And will new egg let me return my celeron proc if I opened and installed it?

My current mobo is:
Brand: ECS
model number: MCP73VT-PM

I also found a quad core that fits an lga 775 which people here told me didn't exist. Obviously super expensive, but would it be worth purchasing ? Would this set my comp up to be viable for the next 3-4 years with the vid card I just bought? Or should I just keep what I got and wait until I can afford a brand new rig in 1.5 years or so? Can my comp even handle this? I am simply assuming I could use it cause I have an lga 775. Is there something else that needs to be taken into consideration as well?

also still looking for an answer to the ram question, and will the old one work fine? Should I be worried? WHen you guys get to it. Very overwhelmed right now, worried I just wasted money and appreciate the help.

I do believe we were suggesting a different dual core cpu though, not the celeron as I was involved in that thread, would have to go back through it and look. I'm involved in a lot of threads so its hard to remember.

And it would be better to have 2 sticks the same size, that way you are sure you will be in dual channel mode.

This processor would have been much better than the celeron you got.

Unfortunately, that processor is only return for replacement of the same if defective. So you won't be able to return it. I would see if someone would buy it from you and get the one I linked you to.

what about the other processors I mentioned? And what kind of ram can my mobo handle? I have no idea how to figure this stuff out. And thanks for the response again. And you were right, a different one was suggested, a guy came in later that linked me to this one, I thought it was the same one as before.

I am assuming duo cores are better for gaming than pentiums?

According to emachines/gateway, your motherboard supports a core 2 duo up to 65 watts. Which right now newegg only has these in stock, which are actually refurbished cpu's.

Like we were trying to tell you before, you have 2 bad things going for you here. You have an OEM system with poor cpu support and its outdated technology. So you either have 2 choices.

1. Get the processor I linked you to

or

2. Save the money and build a new cheap AMD system that I posted in that thread which came to around $650 I believe....

I don't have money for either of those options. I have upgraded my proc which I assume should make some difference, and I also assume the video card will make a difference. I would assume this additions will increase my frame rate in these games.

I have added the proc to my wish list on new egg just in case I come into some money, but I have none left. My budget was 200 bucks and I spent that. I won't have money for 1.5-2 years if that for a new machine. So hopefully these upgrades last me a while. Worst case scenario I should be able to transfer my vid card and psu over to a new system which would save me some cash.

Thanks for the help. I am gauging by your response that having an lga 775 mobo doesn't make it compatible with all lga 775 processors. So Ill just deal with what I got. Appreciate the time you took tonight. I haven't tinkered inside a computer for at least 6 years and a lot has changed since then.
