Video card disappeared...

Ive had my computer for 3-4 years now never had a problem with my video card. NVidia GeForce 6800 GT 256MB. But all of a sudden it just disappeared. All of the files on my computer related to it just up and vanished. and now when i move a window or scroll down something it looks very very choppy, like it is struggling to display it. it happened after i restarted my computer from the latest windows update and during restart it looked very messed up, like trying to play a nintendo game that wasnt blown into enough hehe. so i completely turned off my computer and then turned it back on and then it seemed to be no problem, but then the stuff mentioned above started to happen. i tried downloading the latest drivers for the card but it didnt fix it. anyone have any idea's on what is the problem? thanks

oh and it also reset the monitor screen sizes/geometry

and out of nowhere the screen just resized itself to an incredibly small resolution, i.e. everything is hhuge now, only 2 minimized windows fit in the task bar before it stacks them. this is really really making me sad, i dont want to buy a new computer :(

Mine was glitchy at some points (working/not working), this was to do with the BIOS settings saying the drivers were missing when in fact i could see them. When i got it back to normal i realised ccleaner was deleting something effecting this.

My sisters laptop did the resolution thingy you explain, we just got more RAM for the computer and it is now fine. But restarting computer fixed temporarily.

Your problem sound different than these but i still post on the chance it may help in some way.

I'm curious did you ever reformatted your computer in that time? If not, it might be that there's so much accumulated junk that it's taking over your computer! That or you have fragments on your drive causing corruption of your graphics driver files and whatnot.

I sugguest you try running defrag and clean up your computer this may help. Or, if your up to it, a nice reformat; it's like making your computer new again.

If after the defrag it's still screwie, it might be that update you mentioned. You could try uninstalling it, and/or roll back if you have system restore active to see if that update has something to do with it.

Good luck.

I've defraged it a few times but probably not enough. I just tried to run Halo (the game) and then the options for the new driver that i installed for the video card came up randomly and all the problems went away. but then i restarted my computer and the resolution changed back to smaller dimensions by itself, the windows aren't choppy and it wasn't messed up upon start up. the new NVidia stuff is still on there so i just resized it again. Man i hate technology when it just stops working lol. so gonna try restarting again seeing if it stays normal.

ok defragged my computer and upon restart it did not restart. just stayed a blank black screen. turned completely off and on and it came back on the way it is suppose to. i guess it's fixed, at least its working. and if it aint broke, i'm not going to try to fix it :D
