when i start up the computer the fan makes a grinding noise until windows boots up. Ive cleaded it acouple times but it still makes a noise any suggestions.

It could be a model that spins to max revs until Windows is loaded, then it spins back down to a reasonable level. That combined with the fan vibrating in the casing. I'm not sure though. What model is the card?

If cleaning hasn't helped, perhaps you ought to look at some after-market cooling, such as something from Zalman.

yea... some grafic's cards fan's are on full speed during boot-up,.. and slow down again when windows is running (when the nvidia driver actaully takes over running the card :) )
If its not making noise during windows,.. and its not causing trouble... i would live with it,.. since changing the heatsink void's the guarantee.. if its really annoying tough... yes, then you could use the cooler magicman suggested :o

the noise started happening about 4 months ago it happens on and off but now everytime i start the computer. also for reference the gpu is about a year old

Unlikely, the fan will most likely be integrated in such a way that getting to it and finding what's wrong is difficult, certainly without damaging it. Much less being able to fix it if you actually worked out what was causing it. If the card's within warranty, then return it as faulty. If it's not within warranty, and it's really annoying you, my last post still stands. I'm not sure there's much more to add.
