Video Card fan noise?

I've been having fan noise in my desktop computer for years now. I always thought it was a dust problem and I can temporally stop it after blowing all the dust out with compressed air. Now I'm pretty sure its the fan on my video card and the noise might be stopping after blowing it out because the compressed air turn the fan much faster than on its own. I don't know if I can unplug it to be sure and I want to know if I can put a drop of some sort of oil on the bearing to see if it is the problem. I might have an old video card to replace it with although it might not be compatible, but I have to look for it and that may take months with all the old parts I have.

Depends, if the fan has a cover on the middle, peel the cover off and see if it has a oil hole or if the middle is exposed. Put 1 drop of sewing machine or 3 in 1 oil in it. stick the cover back on.

Do you let the fan free spin when blowing it out? That can cause wear and subsequent noise as a result. Does it freely spin by hand? If not then you could attempt the above suggestion.

Yes, I do let it free spin when blowing it, but I only do it after the noise starts. It usually stops squealing afterwards, but only after a few days to a week. It is possible that it could be the CPU fan and the only reason I suspect the video fan is the location because it sits horizontal where the CPU is vertical.

I have a stethoscope for listening to automotive engines, but I’m afraid of shorting something out on a running computer. I’m not sure if it is sensitive enough to hear the tiny fan bearings. Anyway, other more pressing stuff came up so I just shut it down and I’m using my laptop instead for now.

I used to have boxes of computer parts and got rid of most of them especially the obsolete parts when I moved a few years ago, but still haven’t gone through all the moving boxes yet so I don’t know what I have.
