Hello all

i am new to this forum, I have a question about installing a video card into my HP m8000n.

I believe the stock power supply is 300w. From what i understand this wont handle much

I was looking at these to cards

SAPPHIRE 100196L Radeon X1950PRO 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported

EVGA 512-P2-N757-TR GeForce 8600GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported

what would be the best bet as far as quality and value?

about power supplys would a 500w power supply do the job? I am planing on adding a dvd drive in addition to the stock dvd cdrw and 2 more gb ram bring the total to 4gb

how do i know what type of power supply i have. ATX, BTX. ATX12V? on newegg there is a spec listed as "12v rails" what does that mean

thank all

It should be an ATX form factor PSU. But be careful, HP and the other big company's like to use proprietary parts in their cases. Look at the back of your case where the power cord goes in. Is there a large square opening where the power supply attaches? Or do you see just an opening for the PSU power switch and the power cord?

If you see the large opening, then you should be fine with buying an after market PSU. If you see just the switch and cord opening, then I would guess you would be out of luck.

At least a 430 watt would run what you need, but I would get at least a 500 watt with 12v rails of at least 18 amps.

here are 4 power supplys i am looking at

Rosewill RP550-2 ATX12V v2.01 550W Power Suppl
Rosewill RP550V2-S-SL 550W
NZXT PRC-550W-AP ATX 12V V2.01
COOLMAX CXI-500B ATX12V 500W

I don't need 2 PCI E connectors do i? They are only used on video card correct? I only plane on 1 video card so 1 power connector would be sufficient.... right

thanks
