Video Card Heat Issue

I have a bfg gtx 260 maxcore oc, with the fans set at 70 percent, and when i play ghost recon advanced warfighter, the temps go up to over 80C. This first happened with the fan at 40, and then on all the way to 70.

Is this normal for the temps to go so high, or is there another problem?

Can you ruin a video card by setting the fan to fast?

The faster a fan is set at, the less its life span will be, and it might only be a reduction of say, 6 months. There is really no way of telling when a fan will give out or how long it will last, but just remember it will only spin so many times, so the faster the worse, the slower, the better, but don't let it affect your decision too much. On the other hand, 80c is hot, but not dangerously so. if they get any higher, I would consider maxing out your fan speed, but GPUs get hot under load anyway.

Check to make sure you don't have dust buildup inside the heatsink of the video card. I'm not sure about the GTX 260, but my friend runs a 9800GTX at 100% and he idles at 50C. Either you need better airflow around the card, you need to dust out the card, or you need to reapply the thermal paste.

Sounds like you have poor circulation in your case.

I am currently using a friends GTX 260 to do some testing and at 100% load with stock fan set to 80% it caps at 60c in a 80F room.

It idles at 50c @ 50% fan speed my "normal" speed for all my GPUs. What kind of case/fans do you have?
