video card overheating?

i have a weird problem that has stumped everyone i know. while i am working on my computer it will shut down to power save mode on my monitor. everything else is running normal when it shuts down. shaking the mouse or hitting the keyboard doesn't work to turn power save off. i have to reboot it by turning it off and turning it back on. i have all my power save setting are turned to always stay on.

so it will go to power save like the the computer shut down but the monitor is still on. i can hit a button on my monitor and it will say "there is no signal from your computer"

the video card is really hot. the video card is a nvidia 8800GT.

any help with this would be really appreciated.

I used to have the same problem with my 8600GT, although it wasn't overheating. I got a fan controller program and it would shut down my computer every time the card broke 65C. I just changed the settings and it stopped. You might want to try turning up the fan speed using RivaTuner or something. Check the temperatures with NTune. My card idles around 50C and peaks at around 65C. The card is usually safe until it hits 90C but you don't want to get above 80C.

ok, it looks like it was just dirty. i have it running stable and watching the temp. it peaks at 64C while running the nvidia stability test. i haven't played a game yet so i don't know if it will run hotter. i didn't mess with the fan control.

you guys helped me a ton, i spent all day on this. thanks again.

the funny thing is i blew out the card this morning but i was lazy and didn't take it out of the case so i only got the fan. i forgot to get the heat sink so when i blew that out a big dust bunny came.
