Video card problems.

Hi There I am new to this forum, I hope you guys can help me!

I ran 3DMark06 on my PC and scored 934! which was rather disappointing

I have a Athlon 64X2 4200 chip, Asus M2M mother board, 1G of Ram (800Mhz) and a Nvidia 7300GS gfx card. below is the link to exact card

http://www.palit.biz/en/products/nv_pcie_7300GS.html

I guess the low score is due to the graphics card? What would you recommend to improve the frame rate to an acceptable level. My PC is not very good at playing Unreal Tournament 2004 I have not tried any newer games as it will just not play them.

Would an Nvidia 8000 series card make a difference for me.

(PS I built this rig myself 5 months ago I got a cheap card at the time to save money)

Thanks in advance
Graham. :)

You should consider adding an extra gig of RAM too. But on the GFX issue a 8800gtx or 8600gts would be best. Do you have a Pci-e slot?

Yes, an 8000 series would make all the difference. 8800 GTS 320MB is probably one of the best price/performace cards around. 8600GT or GTS cards are quite nice too.

hi thanks for the info! I do however have one further question. There are several manufactures on the market offering cards with the 8800 8600 gt / gts chip sets. Are there any major differences between manufactures?

EG Palit, BFG, PNY, Gainward, xpertvision?

Does it come down to personal preferance or is one make better than another?

PS yes I have PCI -E slot

That score seems about right for a 7300, actually seems pretty good. My old 6800 did 06 with 1.6k, but that was also with a crappy P4 and 512mb of ram.

Yea, your score is fine. I just scored 409 in 3DMark 06 with my 7300GS overclocked @ 647mhz/1.4ghz. I just bought the 8800GTS, so hopefully it will fly through 3dmark 06!

Well when I compared results on line the nearset PC using my Card and processor scored 704, so my 934 did seem rather good when comparing like for like. I tried turning off my Antivirus, firewall and router and my score went to to 943. I have been reading about the 8800GTS 320mb I think this is the card for me. I would be interesed to know you 3DMark 06 score when you have run the test with yout new card fitted!

Cheers.

there are no major difference among the brands though certain brand offer a overclocked version of the same card some times... like ASUS for example, they come out with the overclocked-liquid-cooled version of 8800GTX...

however, in my opinion, i would rather stick with the major brand like EVGA since the quality of their work is known... I am not sure about other major brand though... only have experience with EVGA so far regarding GPU... but i guess brands like ASUS, GIGABYTE, XFX should be fine...

Thanks for that, I like the idea of Asus as I have an Asus m'board and its been really good so far, will have alook at Evga aswell.

you got a nice rig!

I just got my EVGA 8800GTS 640M Superclocked edition and was able to overclock it a little more.

Before MY MANUAL overclocking, it raised my 3DMark06 Score 7000 Points from the same rig (in my sig) with an X700PRO 256MB.
