have a Gateway Laptop and want to upgrade the video card but can not find anywhere to get a new card. I was wondering if I can even upgrade it or if I can use an external video card and if I can where might I find either an internal or external video card.

in laptops it is generally VERY hard and expensive to upgrade a GPU...

  • you can only upgrade it if you have an nvidia or ATi card
  • very few places sell the cards
  • you have to make sure the card is 100% compatible
  • costs £300+ for a card
  • you have to get the old card out and put the old card in without breaking the laptop (not an easy job)

External graphics card!!! now that's an idea, lol. Would it connect via firewire or USB? lol Don't get me wrong I like the idea, but I don't think its possible though. There isn't much demand for it. As far as upgrading your graphics card for you laptop, I suggest you save up some cash and get a decent gaming desktop. It is just not worthwhile to either upgrade your laptop graphics card or to get a high performing graphics card for your laptop.

Any computer engineer will be able to do it no problem, however it will be very very expensive and there will be compatibility issues, any warranty you have on the device will be completely void as well, keep in mind powerful graphics cards will generate a lot of heat and that is the main reason that powerful graphics processing chips are not available on laptops.

There is soon to be an 'xg station' coming out, for external graphics. was meant to come out mid way through 2007, but that seems to have been put off. Still looks to be around $600 or £300 unfortunately though....
