Video card questions

Hey, just want o ask you guys, is the NVIDIA 6800 256 MB series better than the ATI Radeon X800 256 MB series. If anyone knows which one gets better fps on, say, Doom 3 maximum settings, then could u tell me.

Hiya,

Ooooo......You're going to start the old ATI Vs Nvidia argument with that one! Both are excelleng GPU's. On Doom 3, Nvidia 6800 gets the edge slightly on benchmarks I've seen, but thats not to sy the X800 slows down any! Saying that, the X800 seems to have the edge on Half Life 2. It also depends on what version of the cards you're comparing ie. the top versions are the pro or ultra, with the lowest versions being the LE or SE.

At the end of the day, both wil run all games amazingly, so personal preference. I tend to go with NVidia - not sure why really, just always have and have always been happy with them ;)

 Pretty much answers your question. Choose either and you will not regret it. I would also choose Nvidia but yet again that's only like a custom for me. I would not mind an ATI card either. Both are awsome cards and both will sattisfy you. There is no point arguing which is better when it comes to these two flagship cards. If 2-3 frames/s with some games really rocks your boat, then choose the card according to what game you intend to play. However that's just UBER SILLY :)).

JAN :D

Which card specifically? There are many X800's with 256 mb, and there are several 6800's with 256. A 6800gt will outperform a x800 pro in any game and the 6800gt will outperform the x850xt pe in doom 3. Plus its 100 dollars less than the ultra. Finally, if you get the BFG 6800gt it is almost at ultra speeds and still under warranty.

ok

ok, so if there both in the same realm of preformance, which one is a better value. I don't need any top of the line stuff, just something that would let me play modern games on medium-high settings, and I don't want to spend like $500 on a card when theres a $250 card out there that will get me good performance on games for years to come. I'm guessing that the Nvidia 6800OC, ATI Radeon X800 Pro, and the Radeon 9800Pro 128 MB would be my top choices. I know that the 6800OC is the best performer of the bunch by far, but if I could play a Half Life, Far Cry, or Doom 3 quality game on Medium settings while getting maybe 50-65 fps with the 9800Pro, then I'd stick with that. And is there a unknown third brand out there that is just as good but not as well known, I would like to know about it and what kind of products they make. Thanxs

Slightly?? There's not a hope in hell of a "slight" comparison with Doom3. That's deep nVidia territory.

6600GT or X700XT. Or if you want something like the ASUS V9999GE (6800NU)

I know i'm not adding much here but a card that's good for games years to come is not possible :-).

yea, well...

yea, well... I just want somthing that I cant play some games on for maybe 2005-2006/2007. And right now I have a NVIDIA 5500FX, which I doubt could play good games with, just so u know.

Games

Say I was gonna play Half Life 2 on medium settings, would I need to upgrade to a better card with my NVIDIA FX5500, or could I stay with wat I got. (I have solid specs on the other major categories, 512MB of Ram, Athlon 3300+)

Naturally the 6800

You've got to be kidding me right? Have a look at http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2146&p=3 --- its not a slight edge.

Saying that, the X800 seems to have the edge on Half Life 2.
Again its not a slight edge (although nowhere near as punishing as Doom3 but that's because HL2 is CPU bound)

It also depends on what version of the cards you're comparing ie. the top versions are the pro or ultra, with the lowest versions being the LE or SE.
Yes but the cards being compared are clear: 6800 256MB and X800 256MB (and there are only a few 256MB 6800s)

There are many X800's with 256 mb, and there are several 6800's with 256. A 6800gt will outperform a x800 pro in any game and the 6800gt will outperform the x850xt pe in doom 3
Dont buy based on a few silly numbers for a specific game or two (unless thats all you plan on playing)

ok, so if there both in the same realm of preformance, which one is a better value.
Excellent question: if you are comfortable with modding the video card, probably the X800 would give more value as it is more easily unlocked. As for the 256MB 6800 there's only one or two such cards (to my knowledge) so selection is somewhat limited

It appears ive already replied to this :P

The only thing you really need to upgrade is the video card, anything X700/6600 series and up will work although id personally limit that to X700XT/6600GT and up
